60/40 tin-lead

A 60/40 tin-lead solder flows at a lower temperature and is forgiving — exactly what a learner wants. It wets quickly, gives shiny, reliable joints, and is easy to rework. The downside is the lead content: work in a ventilated space and wash your hands afterwards.

Beginner mistakes that waste money

  • Buying a 110V iron. It will not run on 220–240V without a transformer. Choose a local-voltage iron.
  • Too much wattage. A 60W iron in a beginner’s hand lifts pads and cooks parts. Start low.
  • Wrong solder. Plumbing solder is acidic and will corrode electronics. Use electronics-grade 60/40 or lead-free with rosin flux.
  • A dry, oxidised tip. Tin it after every session. A tip you cannot re-tin is a tip to replace.
  • No ventilation. Solder fumes are not for breathing. A window or a small extractor fan is enough.

Desoldering: how to undo a mistake

Repair means correcting errors, and you will make them. Two tools pull old solder out cleanly.

  • Desoldering pump (solder sucker). Heat the joint, then trigger the plunger the instant the solder melts — the vacuum pulls the molten solder away.
  • Solder wick (desoldering braid). Lay the braid on the joint, press the iron on top, and the wick draws the solder up by capillary action. Trim the used section and repeat.
