How to use a multimeter for beginners is mostly about learning three tests. A digital multimeter measures AC/DC voltage, current, and resistance, and its continuity mode beeps when a circuit path is complete. The beginner basics are simple — black probe in COM and red probe in for voltage and resistance; measure voltage in parallel (circuit live); and measure resistance and continuity with power off. Master those three moves and you can answer the questions that matter in electronics repair: is the battery dead, is this cable broken, and is this wire live?

For phone, laptop and general electronics work, the four functions you’ll actually use are DC voltage, AC voltage, resistance and continuity.

How to use a multimeter for beginners: the parts (30 seconds)

  • Display — shows the reading. On manual-range meters, start at the highest range and step down for accuracy.
  • Dial — selects the function. The symbols you’ll meet: V⎓ (DC voltage), V~ (AC voltage), Ω (resistance), ))) or speaker (continuity), and A (current).
  • Sockets — the black probe always goes into COM; the red probe goes into for voltage/resistance/continuity and into the A/10A socket only for current.

Probe placement: the golden rule

Getting the probes wrong is how beginners blow fuses – or worse:

  • Voltage: probes in parallel, across the two points, circuit can be powered.
  • Resistance and continuity: power OFF first. Never measure resistance on a live circuit — nonsense readings at best, damage at worst.
  • Current: the meter goes in series (break the circuit, insert the meter), power off while connecting, red probe in the A socket.

Before every test: inspect the leads for cracked insulation or exposed copper, confirm the dial is on the right function, and confirm the red lead is in the right socket. Test 1: Is the battery dead? (DC voltage)

Set the dial to V⎓ (DC), choose a range above the expected voltage (a 9V battery → the 20V range), put the red probe to ‘+’, and the black to ‘−’. A healthy 9V battery reads close to 9V; a flat one reads well below. This is the single most useful test when a device “just won’t power on” — and it’s how you can tell a dead phone battery from a charging problem before you buy anything.

Test 2: Is this cable broken? (Continuity)

Power everything off. Set the dial to continuity (beep mode) and touch the probes to both ends of the cable. Beep = the path is complete; silence = a broken conductor inside. Perfect for testing suspect USB or charging cables before you blame the phone — it’s a two-second check that saves you from replacing a perfectly good port.

Test 3: Is this wire live? (NCV / non-contact voltage)

If your meter has NCV (non-contact voltage detection), hold the meter near a wire or socket, and it will sense an AC field without touching the copper — handy as a first “Is this live?” check before you touch anything. It’s a safety aid, not a replacement for proper testing. On a meter with NCV, the sensor sits near the top of the case, and the beep/LED intensity rises as you get closer to a live conductor.

5 safety rules that are not optional

  • Start at the highest range on manual meters, then step down.
  • Never measure resistance or continuity on a live circuit — power off and discharge capacitors first.
  • Never use the current socket to check voltage — this is the classic way to blow the meter’s fuse.
  • Don’t exceed the meter’s rated limits. Check the label; if you’re unsure about a circuit’s voltage, don’t probe it. Working on SA mains (230V) needs care and the right rated tool.
  • Inspect before use — a cracked case, damaged leads, or a low battery warning means fix/replace first.

If the task involves live mains wiring you’re not confident about, call a qualified electrician — a multimeter doesn’t make you one.

For repair bench and home use, look for the following:

  • AC/DC voltage, resistance and continuity as a minimum — most electronics checks live here.
  • NCV — non-contact live voltage detection is genuinely handy and safe for quick checks.
  • Data hold — freezes the reading when the probes are in a tight spot.
  • A clear display and decent test leads included.
